Research and Monitoring

_
The conservancy works in conjunction with Hudson Basin River Watch to monitor the water quality of the Battenkill. Our monitoring program measures and tracks the physical, chemical, and biological health of the river.

Our River Watch program:

  • involves local landowners, farmers, businesses, students, and teachers
  • educates through workshops, school involvement, and public activities
  • monitors the stream velocity, flow, dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH, microorganisms, and macroinvertebrates
  • is preparing a multi-year water quality report of the Battenkill

_Eagle Watch
The Conservancy instituted and Eagle Watch program in 1993 to monitor the population of eagles and other raptors present in the watershed. The Golden (Aquila chrysaetos) and Bald (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) eagles have been making a comeback in this area since their reintroduction to New York in the 1970's. Both species are now occasionally seen along the river corridor.
